HelpSpam is the most common term used for unsolicited email. More official terms are UCE (Unsolicited Commercial Email) or UBE (Unsolicited Bulk Email). The former (UCE) refers to an email which was not requested or is sent without any previous correspondance, in an attempt to sell a product or service. The latter (UBE) refers to any email which is sent to a large number of people without any previous correspondance, but not necessarily in an attempt to make money (one example could be a chain letter). Both of these types of email are considered unacceptable by most Internet users for a number of reasons, including the cost laid on the recipient (both in terms of applicable call costs and the cost associated with time taken to deal with spam), the potential for accidental deletion of genuine email, etc. We try to reduce the amout of spam using two methods: Firstly, the sending of spam (either to or from our servers), as defined in our AUP, is prohibited. This does not mean that either commercial or bulk email is prohibited — merely that email of this type must always be sent with the permission of the recipient. For bulk email, that permission must have been confirmed as defined in our AUP. Secondly, our system provides a large number of options the primary purpose of which is to reduce the amount of spam received to your mailboxes hosted with us. You have a number of options ranging from enabling our default filtering lists and systems to inserting specific criteria to search emails for with the option to bounce messages which match the criteria. |
