A filter is a set of rules which will be applied to an email to perform a direction (either deliver to a local IMAP folder, forward to another email address or bounce back to the sender).

The most common use for filters is to seperate emails into different folders. If you want to avoid receiving certain emails, blocks are better. If you would like emails forwarded on to another email account, a forwarding is easier.
