Help > How to > Use existing domain names in Port995

Follow these steps to make your domain available for use in the Port995 system:

1. Add your domain to your Port995 Admin Panel

To add your new domain to the panel, do the following:

  1. From within your admin panel, click on the “Domains” button from the left-hand navbar
  2. Click on the “New” button
  3. Enter the domain name in the newly created, empty text field.
  4. Click on “OK” at the bottom of the window
  5. Click “Activate”

The new domain will initially be listed with a status of “pending”. To complete the process and make the new domain “active”, you will need to alter the domain's MX record.

2. Request MX Record Change

To use Port995 as an email service for your existing domain, you will need to ask whoever is currently hosting the domain to make a change to the domain's MX records (or make the change yourself, if they provide a facility for this). This will ensure that all emails for the domain are routed to the Port995 mail server.

The two pieces of information you will need to add/update the MX records for your domain are:

The server name
This is based on your main Port995 account username. In all cases, you should take your username, and append “.port995.com” to it. So, if your account username is “steve”, for example, then the server address to use in your MX record would be “steve.port995.com
Priority
As it is possible to specify more than one MX record for a given domain, each server has a priority assigned to it. For any domain you wish to use with Port995, specify a priority of 0 (zero). This is the highest priority an MX record can have. Alternatively, you can specify a value other than 0, provided the value is the highest for your domain. This will ensure that mail is delivered to your Port995 account.

3. Wait for the domain to become “Active” in your Port995 Admin Panel

Once the domain's host has made the changes, you will need to allow a few hours for them to propogate to DNS caches worldwide. The Port995 system checks for this change every hour and will update the status of the domain in the “Domains” area of your panel to “Active” once it is complete.

4. Create mailboxes

Your domain is now ready to use. To ensure you do not lose any emails being sent to your domain, create some mailboxes to receive them, before clicking on the “Activate” button.
