Help > How to > Configure Outlook Express 6

This page describes the procedure for configuring Microsoft Outlook Express 6 (and any similar versions, eg: 6.01) to collect email from a Port995 mailbox (via IMAP) and send email through the Port995 mail server.

This HowTo assumes that you have already created a mailbox in your account, and you have the email address and password you chose to hand.

Configuring Outlook Express

  1. From the main Outlook Express window, access the Tools menu, and then select Accounts....
  2. Click the Add button, and select Mail....
  3. Under Display Name, enter your name and click Next. This is the name others will see as the sender of your emails.
  4. Select I already have an email address that I'd like to use, and enter the email address of the mailbox you have set up in your Port995 control panel, then click Next.
  5. From the drop-down menu, select IMAP.
  6. Under Incoming mail server, enter port995.com.
  7. Under Outgoing Mail Server, enter port995.com and click Next.
  8. Enter the email address you chose for the mailbox you have set up in your Port995 control panel under Account name.
  9. Enter the password you chose for the mailbox you have set up in your Port995 control panel under password.
  10. Ensure the Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) box is unticked.
  11. Click Next and then Finish.
  12. Close the Accounts window. Outlook Express may offer to download a list of folders from the server. Say Yes to this and close the folders window when it has finished.
  13. Your new account should now be visible in the left-hand panel of the main Outlook Express window. Right click on it, select Properties and go to the Servers tab.
  14. Under Outgoing Mail Server, tick the My server requires authentication box.
  15. Click on the Settings.. button and ensure that Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.
  16. Close the Outgoing Mail Server and select the Advanced tab.
  17. Enter 587 as the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) port and click OK.

Your account is now set up and ready to use.

Extra Settings

Secure connections

If you wish to, you can communicate with our mail server using secure connections (TLS/SSL). This will encrypt all communications between your computer and the Port995 mail server to ensure that no-one can eavesdrop on them. This also ensures that your password is safe from eavesdropping.

Note: Outlook Express does not support the simultaneous use of both secure connections and IP masking. Enabling secure connections will disable IP masking.

You can configure Outlook Express to use secure connections as follows:

  1. Right click on the account in the left hand panel of the main Outlook Express window and select Properties.
  2. Open the Advanced tab.
  3. Click on Use Defaults and tick both This server requires a secure connection (SSL) boxes.
Secure Password Authentication

Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is a non-standard system for sending your password to the Port995 server. Despite it's name, it does not provide any extra security and can cause problems when logging in. For this reason we recommend you disable SPA. If you are concerned about the security of your password, you can use secure connections to ensure that it cannot be eavesdropped by anyone monitoring your Internet connection.

If you do wish to use SPA, however, you can enable it as follows:

  1. Right click on the account in the left hand panel of the main Outlook Express window and select Properties.
  2. Select the Servers tab and click on the Settings... button.
  3. Select Log on using and enter the email address and password you chose when you created your mailbox in your Port995 control panel.
  4. Tick the Log on using Secure Password Authentication box and click on OK.
  5. Click on OK to close the Properties window.

Do not select Log on using Secure Password Authentication under Incoming Mail Server in the Servers tab. Enabling this would prevent you from collecting your email.

Mail Account Name

Each mail account you set up in Outlook Express will be given a name to identify it (these are the names that appear in the left-hand panel of the main Outlook Express window). By default, Outlook Express will name the account after the name of the incoming mail server. As this is unhelpful (especially if you have several accounts all using the same server), it is a good idea to change this.

You can change the name for one of your accounts as follows:

  1. Right click on the account in the left hand panel of the main Outlook Express window and select Properties.
  2. Enter the new name for the account in the first text box on the General tab.
  3. Click the OK button.
