Help > How to > Configure Netscape Communicator 4

This page describes the procedure for configuring Netscape Communicator 4 to access a Port995 mailbox (via IMAP) and send emails through our server.

This HowTo assumes that you have already created a mailbox for your account, and have the username and password details to hand. For details, see the mailbox creation HowTo.

Important limitation of Netscape 4: Netscape Communicator 4 limits the number of mailboxes on any one mail server to one. As a result, if you have multiple mailboxes on Port995, you will only be able to check one of these mailboxes with any one copy of Netscape. If you do wish to check more than one mailbox, you may wish to consider upgrading to Netscape Communicator 6, which can support multiple mailboxes on the same mail server. We also have a how-to for configuring Netscape 6 to check Port995 accounts. Our Website will also look better in Netscape 6 (due to the use of advanced CSS features not supported in Netscape 4).

  1. From the main Netscape window, access Communicator, and then select Messenger.
  2. From the Messenger window, select Edit and then Preferences
  3. Open the Mail & Newsgroups list from the left hand side of the Preferences window.
  4. Select Identity from the list on the left.
  5. Enter your name in the field labeled Your name.
  6. In the field labeled Email address, enter the full address for the mailbox you have previously created.
  7. The field labeled Reply-to-address can be left blank unless you want replies you your emails to be directed to an alternative address.
  8. Select Mail Servers from the list on the left of the window.
  9. If you already have any email accounts configured, these will be listed in the field labeled Incoming Mail Servers. If this list already contains an entry for port995.com, this mailbox entry will be overwritten.
  10. Click the button labeled Add....
  11. In the new window, enter port995.com in the field labeled Server Name.
  12. Make sure IMAP is selected from the Server Type list.
  13. In the field labeled User Name, enter the full address of the mailbox you have previously created.
  14. Select the IMAP tab from the list of tabs at the top of the window.
  15. If you would like to download your messages via a secure connection, check the box marked Secure Connection (SSL).
  16. Click on OK.
  17. In the main Mail Servers screen, enter port995.com as your Outgoing mail (SMTP) server.
  18. Enter the full email address of the mailbox you previously created in the field labeled Outgoing mail server user name.
  19. If you wish to send outgoing emails to our mail server via a secure connection, check the option, under Use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) or TLS for outgoing messages:
  20. , labeled Always. Otherwise, check the box labeled Never.
  21. Click OK in the main Preferences window.

The above settings should be enough to begin using Netscape 4 to send and receive email. Your Port995 mailbox should be listed on the left side of the main Messenger screen as a separate option. To access your IMAP folders, you can expand the entry on the left by clicking on the + box.
