Help > How to > Configure Eudora 5.1

This page describes the procedure for configuring Qualcomm Eudora 5.1 for access to a Port995 mailbox (via IMAP) and details of how to send emails through our server using Eudora 5.1.

This how-to assumes that you have already created a mailbox for your account, and have the username and password details to hand. For details of how to create a new mailbox, click here.

  1. From the main Eudora window, access Tools, and then select Options.
  2. Select Getting Started from the list on the left of the Options window.
  3. Enter any name you wish in Real Name.
  4. Enter the address of the mailbox you have created for the Return Address, or alternatively leave blank, or enter another address if you would prefer replies to your emails to be sent to an alternative address.
  5. Enter port995.com for the Mail Server (incoming).
  6. Enter the full email address for the mailbox you previously created as the Login Name.
  7. Enter port995.com for the SMTP Server (outgoing).
  8. Select Checking Mail from the list on the left of the Options window.
  9. Enter port995.com for the Mail Server.
  10. Enter the full email address for the mailbox you previously created as the Login Name.
  11. Under Secure Sockets when Receiving, select whichever option you prefer. As a general rule, if you would like your emails to always be downloaded from our mail server via a secure connection, select Required, STARTTLS from the list, otherwise, you can safely select Never.
  12. Select Incoming Mail from the list on the left of the Options window.
  13. Select IMAP from the Server configuration option.
  14. Make sure Passwords is selected from the Authentication style options.
  15. Select Sending Mail from the list on the left of the Options window.
  16. Enter the address of the mailbox you have created for the Return Address, or alternatively leave blank, or enter another address if you would prefer replies to your emails to be sent to an alternative address.
  17. Enter port995.com for the SMTP server.
  18. Make sure Allow Authentication is enabled.
  19. Under Secure Sockets when Sending, select whichever option you prefer. As a general rule, if you would like your emails to always be sent to our mail server via a secure connection, select Required, STARTTLS from the list, otherwise, you can safely select Never.
  20. Click on OK to confirm the details.

The above settings should be enough to begin using Eudora to send and receive email. Your Port995 mailbox should be listed along with the standard Eudora folders, possibly named <dominant>.

Using secure connections

Eudora 5.1 can support making secure connections to send and receive email and, by default, it should make use of this to encrypt all your connections to Port995. See Eudora's instructions if you need to manually configure Eudora to use encryption.

Eudora can have some problems making secure connections under some conditions. If you seem to be having trouble making a secure connection, you may find that adjusting the size of Eudora's Network Buffer alleviates this. This setting can be found in Advanced Network from Options... under the Tools menu. Values of 8192 and 16384 have been reported to work well.
